"I didn't want to leave the animals alone"
For five years, Zenon* was exploited in the circus. He was paid in liquor, occasionally struck, and several times trampled by animals. Yet he didn't leave. Because he didn't want to leave 'his' animals alone. But mostly because he had no one to go to. The circus and the liquor, that was his only escape.
Zenon's room in a protected residential care facility of the Salvation Army looks colorful. Various murals adorn the walls. On the corner of his dining table stands a drawing of his former home in Eastern Europe. He also has a lot of cookies and drinks prepared, which he offers several times. His guests should want for nothing.
