Artists – Nick & Bas

This pair of socks was designed by artists Bas Steens and Nick Spiecker from Breda. Their collaboration began during an art project on World Homeless Day in Breda. While working together on a large-scale artwork, they got to know each other. What started as a creative collaboration grew into a close friendship. Today, they see each other as true friends and continue to inspire one another.

For Nick, these socks are much more than just a design. They contain memories of the time when he experienced homelessness—a period in which he not only had no place to call home but also often felt alone. He experienced how some people turned away, while others chose to see him and offer support. Those experiences became the foundation of this design.

The eye is the central symbol of the artwork. It represents Nick, but also anyone facing a vulnerable or difficult situation. The tears symbolize sadness and loneliness, while carrying one clear message: don't look away. Behind every face is a story we often don't know.

Hidden within the illustration is also a heart. For Nick, it symbolizes humanity. As he says: "It's not just your mind, but above all your heart that makes you human." It reminds us that a small gesture, a conversation, or simply acknowledging someone can make a world of difference.

Music also plays an important role in the design. During difficult times, it gave Nick hope, comfort, and positive emotions. That's why he wanted to incorporate musical elements into the artwork as symbols of hope, strength, and resilience.

As Nick himself says: "I'm really proud of it."
